Swimming pool design for maximum fun and enjoyment

The first thing to consider when designing your pool is its intended use. Would you like to swim, do physical therapy, exercise, entertain your guests, let the kids have fun, or impress your neighbors? After all, you want to have a pool for one reason or for many reasons to improve your life. Arguably the intended use of a pool has the greatest impact on how it should be designed, and therefore the needs and wants that your pool is supposed to fulfill need to be identified early in the design process. Recognizing the main function of the pool is also useful to help you narrow down your design choices. In the following sections, we will discuss some of the most popular benefits people get from owning a swimming pool and their impact on pool design.

Fun and recreation:

The most common reasons to buy a pool are family fun and relaxation. The backyard pool is a great place to relax in the summer, have fun with the kids and throw inflatable toys. If that's the only reason you want a swimming pool, then the simplest and cheapest pool design will suffice. If your budget is big, you may want to invest in something luxurious, but if not, an above-ground pool or a shallow in-ground pool will suffice for your needs. A pool that is at a constant depth of 4 feet is deep enough for an occasional splash and swim, but also shallow enough to keep the whole family safe.

Sports:

If you want to use your pool for serious exercise, the dimensions of your pool require more critical consideration. For lap swimming, it is recommended to use a pool at least 25 feet long and 3.5 feet deep, with a typical length ranging from 25 to 40 feet. There are also special pools which are relatively very narrow and therefore suitable for narrow spaces. Water aerobics requires a little deeper to avoid bottoming out. Usually a section of the pool 5 to 6 feet deep is sufficient for this purpose.

Another option for swimmers is a spa pool, which is a small pool, usually no more than 12 feet deep, that can generate strong currents to swim against. You can then swim against the current while remaining in place. Its small size also makes the installation of an indoor swimming spa a very viable option in most cases.

Party and reception:

If a pool party is in your future, you may need to think about some other design issues. This mostly involves landscaping and designing the area around the pond. You may want to surround the pool with a terrace or deck, adding a pool house, gazebo, outdoor bar, furniture, etc. Also, you may want the pool to be designed for appearance, with a streamlined build, not just for functionality. Hiding pool equipment carefully will also make the pool area more attractive.

Relaxation:

Spending time in your pool can be very relaxing, and the right facilities will make it even more enjoyable. Adding a spa or hot tub to a swimming pool is a great addition to the pool itself. Like ponds, it is an in-ground variety and portable above ground. In-ground spas are generally connected to swimming pool heating and filtration systems. And if not, a portable hot tub is a much cheaper option.

If you spend time sunbathing by the pool, make sure you leave room for it. And if you opt for the above-ground variation of the pool, adding a large deck on the surface of the pool makes a lot of sense.
